Put It Out Into the Universe

Sarah Putt, MA, OTR/L

I heard this years ago.

I was a few days into my first job as an occupational therapist.

It was at a small outpatient pediatric clinic.

I remember sitting with my new boss and she made a comment about how she had been dreaming about moving into a bigger space.

She said, “If I want it to happen, I just gotta put it out into the universe”.

While I didn’t think too much about it at the time, fast forward 3 months and there we were, unpacking our therapy supplies and materials into a brand new, huge clinic space.

I was completely in awe that she had dreamed of doing it, put it out into the universe, and then actually made it happen.

And over the years this continues to happen when myself or my friends put things out into the universe.

It happened when I started my private practice, the podcast, volunteering abroad, and the list goes on and on.

The other day I made mention that I hope to get into teaching one day. And while it hasn’t happened yet, just putting it out into the universe led to a ton of people reaching out to me saying that I would make a great teacher. And honestly I can’t even tell you how much hearing those words meant to me.

Maybe it will happen one day and maybe it won’t, but at least I put it out there.

Sometimes a simple statement can make the difference between a dream coming true or not.

So what about you… what do you want to put out into the universe? What is something that you hope happens one day?
