My Biggest Regret from OT School

Sarah Putt, MA, OTR/L

What do you think it is?

Should I have studied more?

Or allowed more time to complete all the readings?

Or even focused more on self-care and me time?

Well, let me tell you… it is none of these.

The one thing I wish I had done more of in OT school was be more active.

I wish I would have been a part of SOTA (student OT association), gone to my local state and AOTA conferences, and just been more active in advocating and promoting the profession even as a student.

I am so impressed when I meet students now who are a part of all the things and always wish that I was more informed back in my day when I was a student.

Now I know that OT school is hard in general so I’m not saying go and do everything and load up your plate with way more than you can handle. But if you can prioritize your schedule and make time for one thing, I would highly suggest getting involved in some association as a student.

It’s my biggest regret from grad school.

There are so many different ways to get involved these days. All you gotta do is find the one (or more) that lights you up and adds to your overall school experience.

So tell me are you (or were you) involved in any student associations/ groups/ conferences? Which ones are (were) you a part of? What value do (did) you get out of them? Would you recommend other students getting involved in them?
