W is for Wheelchair

As occupational therapy practitioners, we focus a lot on promoting mobility and independence within the home and community. Wheelchairs are one way that we help our clients access this.

Not only do we help people learn to use wheelchairs in order to navigate their environments, but we also assist people in transferring to and from a wheelchair (i.e. to a chair, toilet, bed, car, etc).

Another cool thing I got to test out when I was at the OT program in Estonia was a wheelchair with stand-up functionality. I had seen these for years, but had never tested one out for myself. What an awesome capability and the whole time I kept thinking about how much this would open up possibilities for some of our clients.

Have you ever tried one of these before?
