Welcome to the OT 4 Lyfe podcast.  I launched this podcast back in October 2018 and since then have released 37 episodes. I have brought on some amazing guests and covered a wide range of topics, from pediatric OT practice, to animal assisted therapy, using evidenced in practice, the business side of OT, travel therapy and international volunteer work, the importance of collaborating with physical therapists, inclusion, and I released a fieldwork mini series, as well as the first steps to becoming an OT.

Although I’ve covered a lot of topics, I haven’t really gone into much detail about who I am and what this podcast is all about. So that’s what today will be about. I want to use today’s episode for you to get to know me a little better and also understand my why behind creating OT 4 Lyfe.

Unlocking the Potential of Occupational Therapy with Sarah Lyon


Episode Summary

In today’s society, there is a bunch of research coming out for healthcare professionals to utilize and help guide clinical practice. Nowadays the amount of research is doubling at an outstanding rate. But there continues to be many barriers, i.e. time, accessibility, and generalizing of research across populations, for practitioners in order to incorporate research into their daily roles.

Sarah Lyon, OTR/L joins the show to discuss her passion of evidenced-based practice and how she has developed the OT Potential Journal Club to help therapists stay up-to-date on the research and ultimately develop confidence and competence in order to provide the best clinical care to their clients. Sarah is a firm believer in the power of evidenced-based practice in order to promote our profession by not only allowing OTs to have a seat at the table, but to have them be leaders at the table.

Inclusion, Education, and All the Colors of the Rainbow with Devlynn Neu


Episode Summary

Part of being an occupational therapist is advocating for ourselves, our clients, and our profession.  We aim to be client-centered in our therapy and strive to be inclusive for people regardless of race, identity, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status.  Statistics have shown that members of the LBGT+ community face challenges accessing and receiving appropriate healthcare.

Devlynn Neu, MS, OTR/L comes on the show today to discuss important facts, education, and considerations for therapists and clients within the LBGT+ community.  He shares his experiences working as an openly gay man within the field of occupational therapy, including both the positive and challenges that he has faced throughout his experience as an OT. Devlynn embodies inclusion and advocacy in all that he does and constantly stands up for his clients, his profession, and this community as a whole.

Devlynn is also the creator of The Rainbow OT, a blog which serves to promote inclusion, foster representation, provide education, and encourage unity within healthcare for members of the LBGT+ community.

Uncorking Topics in Occupational Therapy with Miranda Rennie

Being a lifelong learner is something that is constantly brought up within the profession of occupational therapy. From being a student in OT school, to becoming a new practitioner, to doing research to further the knowledge base for our profession, we are constantly learning new ideas, picking up new skills, and gaining a deeper understanding of how occupations influence health for us as practitioners and for our clients.

Becoming an Occupational Therapist: Starting an OT Program with Rachel Moore

Helping Kids with Autism Learn, Play and Thrive with Meg Proctor

Many kids with autism have significantly delayed play skills, as well as they have difficulty learning new skills and expanding upon the skills they already have. More often than not therapists find themselves trying to teach children with autism how to play through imitation, but these children often have major difficulty with the imitation of others. Combine that with poor engagement and visual regard for others and learning to play for a child with autism can be daunting task. In this episode, we bring on Meg Proctor MS, OTL/R who is an expert in working with children with autism and who loves teaching therapists strategies to put in their tool belt. Double Timing Documentation with Jason Gonzales

Documentation. It is something that all therapists are faced with and unfortunately, it is something that tends to take up a lot of our time. While some of it is very important stuff that we need to include, there are other parts of documentation that are just time sucks. It is commonplace that most reports take between 2-3 hours (or more) to write and that is outside of completing the necessary observations, interviews, standardized tests, scoring and interpreting results, etc. Jason Gonzales OTR/L, the Co-Founder and CEO of Double Time Docs comes on the show today to share how his experience within a variety of school districts, led him to creating a product to help therapist write reports efficiently and easily.
